Mission

Guinea has a rich biodiversity recognized by scientists but poorly used by the population. Conscious of this fact, the Government of Guinea ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity to reverse this trend.  The Guinean GBIF node, through its network, seeks to be a tool for the implementation of the Convention for the well-being of the Guinean population.

History

The Centre d'Observation de Surveillance et d'Information Environnementales (COSIE) is the host institution for GBIF-GUINEE, which has the principal mission to collect, analyze, manage, archive and make accessible data on the environmental status at the national level. The node of GBIF-GUINEE is mandated to collect species occurrence data on the national and international level in order to make these available to data users and decision makers. The data collected and disseminated by COSIE enable the generation of statistics to support decision making by authorities, in order to integrate ecological considerations into programmes and plans for the socio-economic development of Guniea. These ecological considerations have the goal of protection of the environment and biological diversity.

Structure

GBIF-GUINEE is established within COSIE, the signatory of the GBIF Memorandum of Understanding, as a specialized team working on the collection of biodiversity occurrence data from data publishers to enable their publication on the Internet. These data publishers are around 15 institutions recognized on the national level that form the national network of publishers of biodiversity data created by the Guinean node. The network members have signed a partnership agreement with GBIF-GUINEE.

The node team is composed of the Head of Delegation, representing Guinea on the political level; the Node Manager, coordinating the activities of the network; and the team tasked with the collection of data: one role focused on botanic data, one on zoological data, and one informatics specialist.
